BSN: WHAT? WHY? HOW?

Are you looking to work in The Netherlands? You will require a BSN.

Everyone who is looking to live (and work) in the Netherlands is required to obtain a BSN. Here is some useful information that can help you get started.

What is a BSN?

This is short for ‘burgerservicenummer’. It is equivalent to the citizen service number. 

Why do you need a BSN?

You need the BSN for a number of crucial activities:

  • For your employer or client to process your wages and keep a correct financial administration
  • For you to open a bank account
  • To apply for the 30% tax benefit (if applicable)
  • For you to use the healthcare system

How do you apply for a BSN?

In order to receive a BSN you need to register with the Municipality. The Municipality that governs over your selected residence area. After registration of your identity and place of residence, you will automatically receive a BSN. Some Municipalities provide the BSN on the spot, whereas others will send it to you by post. If your partner and/or children have also come to live in the Netherlands, you will also need to register them in person at the municipality. They will need a valid form of ID aswell. If you are staying phewer than 4 months, you can register at any of the 19 RNI municipalities.

What information is required in order to complete your BSN application?

  • A valid proof of identity
  • A passport in most cases
  • An ID is sufficient if you originate from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and / or Leichtenstein
  • A visa / work permit (if applicable)
  • An original birth certificate (not a copy!)
  • A purchase or rental contract of your accommodation / place of residence
